Most of the arrangements on Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange are superficially fairly simple. This intimate look into his psyche is what contributes to the emotional connection many have with his music. ‘Sierra Leone’ has a similar drum beat to ‘Thinking Bout You’ but, his choice to this time create it on a synthesised drum machine, creates the atmosphere that you’re inside Ocean’s internal monologue. Bridget Kelly eventually released her own version, called ‘Thinking Bout Forever’, but it was Ocean’s version that was nominated for Record of the Year at the Grammy’s. ‘Thinking Bout You’ was originally written for Bridget Kelly, but after Ocean released his demo version on Tumblr, Island Records realised the song was meant for Ocean and it was his version that was sent to radio. His melodic rap over the top follows the cadence of the drum beat, which locks you further into this mood, before he takes use to the clouds with his angelic falsetto on the chorus: “Do you not think so far ahead, because I been thinking about forever, oooh”.įrank Ocean performs ‘Thinking Bout You’ on Saturday Night Live in America The pair together create a trance like vibe to Ocean’s opening single on the album. The drum beat over the top of that isn’t distinctly a heartbeat, but shares a similar rhythm.

What immediately strikes as the song starts is the low reverb on the beat, which makes it more like something you feel as opposed to hear. Followed is the first single on the album ‘Thinking Bout You’. The track is 45 seconds of white noise, almost allowing you to take and breath and prepare for what’s to come. It didn’t matter is you were a boy or girl, or what box you seemed to fit in, if you had a playlist shuffling in your earphones or on a speaker Frank Ocean would be on it.įrank Ocean’s Channel Orange starts with the creatively named intro ‘Start’. I remember back when I was in secondary school (or high school) Frank Ocean seemed to be the only thing anyone was listening to.

It’s a very well written album, with beautiful songs that all contain deep meanings. The subject now poses a threat to the singer Frank’s job, but he can’t bring himself to withdraw her from said job.Īll in all, I would give this album a 9/10. The subject of the song is a woman who got so caught up in her job that involves international trade, and now she’s lost in her profession. “Lost” can be vaguely described as a love song. The other songs have more of an upbeat vibe, but this song is slower and sadder.Īs I said, “Sweet Life” is my favorite song on the album, but “Lost” is a close second. The reason I don’t like this song is that it just puts me in a different mood than the rest of the songs on the album. My least favorite song on the album is “Pink Matter.” Don’t get me wrong, every song on this album is amazing, this song just isn’t my favorite out of them all. It describes the difference between privilege and actually working for things you want.

My personal favorite song on the album is “Sweet Life.” This song is an example of how not everything in life is given to you. The songs on this album just give off the general vibe of a retro summer. This album has a somewhat retro theme as most of the songs have audio clips from older television shows.
